It is all started when Michigan coach Fielding Yost accidentally left the team's large earthenware water Jug at Northrop field after game against Minnesota in 1903.

The next morning the Jug was turned into L.J. Cook, Minnesota's Athletic director. Yost wrote to him to request the Jug back. Cook told Yost he would have to win it back.

In 1909 when the two teams next competed against each other, Michigan won the Brown Jug back. Since then Michigan wolverines and Minnesota Gophers compete every year for The Brown Jug. It's the oldest rivalry in college football history.
